Planning your first trip to Azerbaijan? Here are a few simple tips that will help you feel more confident and make the most of your stay.
1. Visa & Entry
Many nationalities can apply for an e-visa online via the official ASAN Visa portal. It’s quick and usually takes just 3 working days.
Tip: Always double-check the entry requirements before your trip.
2. Currency
The official currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). Credit cards are accepted in most places, but it’s good to carry some cash for small shops and taxis.
Tip: Avoid exchanging money at the airport — city rates are better.
3. Transport
Baku has a clean and affordable metro system, as well as taxis and ride-hailing apps like Bolt.
Tip: Download the Baku Metro app or get a transport card for convenience.
4. Languages
Azerbaijani is the official language. Russian is also widely spoken, especially in cities. English is common in tourist areas like hotels, restaurants, and museums.
5. Internet & SIM Cards
You can buy a local SIM card (Azercell, Bakcell, Nar) at the airport or in the city with a passport.
Tip: Free Wi-Fi is available in many cafés and hotels.
